Learning Around Boyne!

Grade 1s have been learning about Procedural Writing. They built a snowman out of plasticine and then wrote a procedural piece to describe the steps they did. They loved having a little friend on their desk for the day!

Have a great week!

Important Information and Reminders:

Town of Milton message - License Plate Recognition Program Launch

The Town of Milton is continually reviewing proactive measures that support the safe passage of students and promote overall community safety.

Starting March 3, 2025, the Town of Milton is introducing a Licence Plate Recognition program (LPR) to enhance parking enforcement efforts. Cameras mounted on by-law vehicles will capture images of illegally parked or stopped cars, automatically issuing violation tickets.

The Town is prioritizing enforcement within school zones, within community safety zones, and for overnight, on-street parking restrictions. Tickets will be mailed to registered owners and will include:

To protect privacy, the Town will blur people and other vehicles where possible. Recorded data will be used exclusively for enforcement purposes.

Please note that since there is a delay between the infraction and mail delivery of a ticket, offenders who illegally park on consecutive days may receive multiple tickets before being notified of the original infraction.

This program promotes safer streets for drivers and pedestrians while ensuring compliance with parking regulations.

Please help support the safety of children in your school community. If you need to drop off your student at school, please:

For more details, visit the LPR webpage or contact us with questions.

2024-25 Student of Excellence

Each year all schools in Halton nominate one student to receive the Student of Excellence Award. This year for Boyne P.S. our recipient is Serenidy Lindsay.

Serenidy is a hard working and positive student who has a love of learning and embodies the Boyne Motto - “Work Hard, Be Nice, Make a Difference”. Serenidy is a kind and compassionate leader in the school community. She has a special skill of making everyone feel included and that everyone’s voice is heard. She always ensures that everyone feels welcome not only within the classroom but throughout the school.  She dedicated her personal time to research women’s involvement during the World Wars for the Remembrance Day assembly. She also volunteers her time to support the Special Olympics and assists staff members by organizing supplies.

Serenidy’s positive attitude is shared around the school through her involvement in various school activities. She is involved in Student Senate Subcommittees, Boyne’s Black Youth Alliance, school band and is currently volunteering to help out with the Jr Girls Volleyball team. Serenidy is actively involved in all school sports including volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer, cross country and track and field.

Congratulations to Serenidy on your achievements and contributions! Your efforts are making a positive impact on the Boyne Community, and you should be proud of the difference you have made.

Winter Safety Reminders

With the recent heavy snowfall, we are actively working to clear and salt our school properties. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue snow removal efforts throughout the day and into the week.

In partnership with Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS), we are sharing some important reminders for safely travelling to and from school.

1) Snowbank Safety at Bus Stops and School Loading Zones
Families are asked to remind children to stay off snowbanks at bus stops and school loading zones. Snowbanks create blind spots for drivers and increase the risk of students slipping, tripping or sliding into traffic.

2) Dress for Winter Weather
Cold temperatures and snow can lead to delays in school transportation. Families are reminded to dress warmly for the weather while waiting at the bus stop.

3) Check for Bus Delays & Cancellations
In the event of inclement weather, please check the Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) website for updates on school bus delays and cancellations. For information about the Halton District School Board’s Inclement Weather procedures, please visit the Bus Cancellation and School Closure – Inclement Weather page of the HDSB website.

4) Stay Informed with the BusPlanner Delays App
If you have not yet downloaded the BusPlanner Delays App, we encourage you to do so to receive real-time delay and cancellation notifications for your child’s bus routes and runs, as well as general notices for inclement weather.

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. Safety tips for students who walk to and from school can also be found on the Walk and Wheel to School webpage.

Thank you for your support as we work together to keep students safe this winter.

HDSB parents/guardians, students, staff and community members encouraged to provide input on 2025-2026 budget:

The Halton District School Board invites parents/guardians, students, staff and community members to provide input on the budget development process for the 2025-2026 school year through an online survey by Feb. 9, 2025 at 4 p.m.

The education sector has been presented with unprecedented challenges and funding pressures in recent years, compounded by an expected decline in student enrolment next year, driven by aging neighbourhoods and slower growth in new developments within Halton. With student enrolment as the main driver of funding, this decline will result in lost revenue, leading the HDSB to budget a $1.8 million deficit this year that must be eliminated next school year through a restrained budget development process focused on cost containment and balancing resources within funding limitations.

To support community engagement and understanding of the budget development process, the HDSB invited community members to submit questions that were answered during a public information session on Monday, Jan. 20. A recording of the session, along with frequently asked questions (FAQs) and additional resources, is available on the 2025-2026 Budget Input webpage of the HDSB website (hdsb.ca). Community members are encouraged to review these resources and provide feedback to help guide decision-making by identifying areas of priority and how the HDSB can minimize impact while achieving financial goals.

The budget development process aligns the allocation of resources to the HDSB’s strategic priorities, as identified in the 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan and the annual operating plan.

Anti-Sex Trafficking Information Session on Feb. 20:

The Halton District School Board, in collaboration with SAVIS of Halton and EFRY Hope and Help for Women, invites HDSB families and community members to an Anti-Sex Trafficking Information Session on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025. The session will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Georgetown District High School (70 Guelph Street, Georgetown).

This session is being held in response to overwhelming participation in the joint Anti-Sex Trafficking information sessions held in February and June 2024 in Milton. This third session will be held in Halton Hills and will be identical in content to reach those in the community who were unable to attend the first two sessions. View a recap video from a previous session to learn more about the information and resources provided.

Those interested in attending can register online. This information session is open to all members of the community, and registration will remain open until the event reaches full capacity. Child minding will be provided at no cost for school-age children (Kindergarten to Grade 8). Overflow parking will be available next door at St. George's Anglican Church (60 Guelph Street, Georgetown).

The session will uncover the realities of sex trafficking and exploitation and provide insight into who is at risk, digital and cyber security considerations, warning signs and how to keep our children and youth safe. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from survivors of sex trafficking and representatives from Halton Regional Police Service, SAVIS of Halton and EFRY Hope and Help for Women. This event offers a unique opportunity to learn about the direct effects sex trafficking has on the individual and their community.

We look forward to connecting with you at this important session. If you have any questions, please email contact@hdsb.ca.

On Friday Boyne staff did the “Question Challenge” that has been on social media. One teacher rep from each grade and group had a clicker for the day, and they recorded each time they were asked a question. The results aren’t all in, but so far Kindergarten had 483 and Grade 8 had 486! So much fun!

Boyne Winter Concert - Jan. 30th 5:30pm

The Music Ensembles at Boyne have been working very hard to prepare for the The Boyne Winter Concert. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please note: Forms have been sent home with performers to inform families of the details of the concert.

From the Principal’s Desk

We continue to be concerned about safety at drop off and pick up. Cars are double parked in no parking zones on either side of Farmstead, many drivers are making U-turns in front of the school - which is prohibited, and with pedestrians crossing in front of traffic, between parked cars, we are seriously concerned that we will have a tragic accident. Please consider dressing warmly (in layers) and walking to and from school. If you must drive please park in a legal parking spot and walk back to the school.

Please use the walkway across the back of the parking lot to the sidewalk along the fence if you are walking south on Farmstead. This greatly reduces pedestrian risk by avoiding crossing the sidewalk at the entrance and exit to the parking lot.

Safety is more important than convenience. Please help keep all of our Boyne Bears and their families safe!

Message from Halton Public Health

We are reaching out to make sure that families in your community know where to go when they need non-emergency care. To help, we’ve created a dedicated "Know Your Healthcare Options" page on our website that offers essential information on healthcare services available in our area, including virtual care, walk-in clinics, Health811, and more. This initiative is proudly supported by the Connected Care Halton Ontario Health Team (CCH OHT), a collaborative group of healthcare organizations and providers working together to improve care for the people of Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville. Through partnerships like this, we aim to ensure seamless access to healthcare resources for families across our region.

We believe these resources can play a crucial role in improving healthcare awareness and access for families in your community. If you have any questions or need assistance with how to integrate these materials into your communications, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued support in promoting health and well-being in our community. We look forward to working together to ensure everyone has access to the healthcare services they need this holiday season and beyond.

We invite you to explore our resource page, which is a comprehensive digital guide designed to empower individuals and families with the knowledge they need to make informed healthcare decisions. To make it easier for you to share this information, we’ve included a QR code below, which provides direct access to the page and can be easily incorporated into your publications

Presentations - Grades 1, 2 and Kindergarten

Babarinde Williams is continuing his work at Boyne and will be doing a drumming workshop for Grades 1 and 2 students on December 6th. This connects to the Music Curriculum.

His mission statement is:

“To use the art of music, dance, and drumming as a vehicle for character development, leadership, and mental well-being” Smash Rhythm is a drumming workshop that will be visiting our Kindergarten classes on December 11th and 12th. This workshop connects to our Kindergarten program by promoting exploration.

Their mission statement is:

"Exploring music through leadership, creativity and rhythm."

“CRASH represents an alternative, dynamic and engaging approach to music education and exploration. CRASH uses bucket drumming to tie together teamwork, creativity and fun while also learning the basics of music, composition, rhythm and drumming. We believe that every child should have access to music education.”  These experiences are paid for through our lunch fundraisers.

Progress Reports

It’s hard to believe we are already into our first official reporting time this year. November is progress report and conference month. The progress reports will be sent home tomorrow and then will be followed by student-led or student involved conferences. We look forward to welcoming our families for these important conferences. Students will be working with their teachers to prepare for this sharing of their progress to date.  This is a great time for your children to reflect on their learning and share their goals and next steps with you.

It is important to make sure that we are looking at these reports as they are meant to be - a capture of student progress at this moment in time. The Progressing With Difficulty, Progressing Well and Progressing Very Well options on the progress report are still based on provincial standards for the current grade and based on assessment data that comes from the teacher conversations with students, the teacher observations of students and products that students produce for their teachers. We celebrate our students’ success and will be supporting all students to move forward as we move into Term 1.

Multi-Year Strategic Plan

At the Nov. 5, 2024 Board meeting, Trustees of the Halton District School Board approved the 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) to set direction and prioritize the collective actions of all students, staff, families and community members over the next four years. Serving as a roadmap, this plan will inform the Board’s decisions and allocation of resources to create an environment where students and staff thrive.

Thorough public consultation that began in spring and continued into fall played a critical role in developing the 2024-2028 MYSP, as the input received provided further insight into the interests of the broader HDSB community. Trustees and staff collaborated closely throughout the development process to ensure the plan reflects the shared priorities voiced by the HDSB community.

The 2024-2028 MYSP builds on the achievements of the 2020-2024 plan and adds a sixth commitment to emphasize the growing importance of kindness, connection and community within our schools and organization. This new commitment reflects the Board’s dedication to creating inclusive and welcoming learning environments where all students and staff feel a sense of belonging. The six commitments outlined in the plan are:

Further information to engage and inform the community about each commitment will be shared as the 2024-2028 MYSP is rolled out.

Treaties Recognition Week

Treaties Recognition Week 2024 takes place from November 3-9th. This is an opportunity to educate, raise awareness, and understand the legality of treaties and the treaty relationship. All students, staff, and community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, benefit from learning about the treaties, truths, histories, excellence and current realities of Indigenous peoples.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission states that, “Too many Canadians still do not know the history of Indigenous peoples’ contributions to Canada, or understand that by virtue of the historical and modern Treaties negotiated by our government, we are all Treaty people. History plays an important role in reconciliation; to build for the future, Canadians must look to, and learn from, the past.”

Our Treaty Partners are the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Take a look at their website to learn more about the land we are on and the treaties that are in place.

Drumming Anti-Bullying Workshop

On November 15th, we will host Barbarinde Williams for anti-bullying drumming workshops “All Different All Equal” for Grades 3-8. This is funded through our food days fundraising. Stay tuned for further dates and programs for K-2.

“Creating a caring and safe school climate is a shared priority for all of us. The goal of  this assembly presentation is to help students celebrate what makes them, and others, unique. It is the right of every student to feel safe and included in the school environment without fear of bullying. This workshop celebrates our differences because experience has shown that bullying usually occurs because of our perceived differences.

This is also a character development presentation designed to awaken the senses of your students towards kindness and humanity.  In traditional African society, we call this “Ubuntu” (humanity) According to the concept of “Ubuntu” (pronounced: uu-Boon-too) there exists a common bond amongst us all and it is through this bond, through our interaction with our fellow human beings, that we discover our own human qualities. As the Zulus would say, “Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu”, which means that a person is a person through other persons. We affirm our humanity when we acknowledge that of others. This presentation employs the African family system of “kinship” and “clan” not only for social and emotional empowerment, but also for psychological development and transformation. It is the principle of caring for each other.

The goal is to create courageous students who would not turn away when they see someone in need. We hope to transform your students into individuals that would walk taller, smile brighter and think deeper, with their heads held high knowing that the good and humanity of the next person will not allow another to prey on them. This is about creating a happy, positive environment devoid of bullying and other forms of negative behavior. We can all unite against bullying because we are connected. This presentation is brought alive through songs, music, chants, drumming and storytelling. It would be presented with 80 drums and other percussion instruments. This is an empathy-based assembly that assists in character building. It would lead our students to be more socially sensitive, less aggressive, and more likely to challenge injustice.”

If you have not done so already, please register for School Cash Online. This is how we collect any fees for school trips or the lunch and snack programs. It provides you step by step instructions on how to register. You will need your child’s HDSB Student Number (not OEN) to register. If you have any questions please contact the office.

Inclement Weather Reminders for HDSB Families

With temperatures still keeping us guessing, winter weather could surprise us any time! To stay prepared, we would like to share information on how decisions are made to help keep students, staff and families safe when wintry conditions arrive.

If your child is bused to school, please ensure you know which transportation zone you are located in. This is important information to have on days when weather conditions may affect bus routes.

In the event of inclement weather, the decision to close schools and/or cancel buses is communicated by 6:30 a.m. We use a variety of methods to communicate this important information including the HDSB website (hdsb.ca), SchoolMessenger email system, the HDSB Mobile App, social media, TV and radio news channels.

We encourage all families to review the HDSB Inclement Weather Reminders. A printable version of this information is also available.

Please note: When schools are closed due to inclement weather, both in-person and e-learning support will not be provided. If buses are cancelled but schools remain open, in-person and e-learning courses will continue as scheduled. We recommend students dress appropriately for the weather and follow our safety tips for walking to school if attending school on these days.

Thank you for helping us keep our school communities safe and warm during the winter months and throughout the school year.

Halloween Celebration

As October 31st approaches, our students can choose to wear a costume or dress in orange and black if they wish to do so.

Please know that costumes that mimic the traditional attire of an ethnic, religious, racial or gender group/identity are inappropriate and unacceptable for Halloween at our school.

This includes dressing in clothing of the opposite gender that is demeaning. Pretending to be a member of a group for ‘fun’ is evidence of cultural appropriation and sends the message that cultural attire is a ‘costume’ to be donned for entertainment purposes. Additionally, do not wear costumes that require you to

assume a racialized minority or other marginalized identity. Assuming such an identity for entertainment purposes trivializes and disrespects the oppression of the group.

Examples of costumes that mimic ethnic, religious, racial or gender group/identity

include:

● a caricature or representation of an Indigenous person by a person who does not have Indigenous Identity (e.g., Pocahontas)

● a person who is Transgender

● a person who is a Khalsa Sikh

● a person who is a Hasidic Jewish person

If your child(ren) choose(s) to dress up in a costume for Halloween, please ensure that they are contributing to the positive and prosocial climate that our school is cultivating around recognizing Halloween.

Costumes that are intended to, or have the impact of, inciting fear and anxiety for others are not acceptable costumes and special sensitivity needs to be exercised around current socially trending incidents such as people dressing up as characters from popular media and approaching youth to frighten them at random. In the past, this has included scary clowns. Replica weapons and costume masks should not be brought to school.

Thank you for making this a fun day for all of our Boyne Bears.

Early Dismissal

Please note: We will not be calling into classes to locate students for early dismissal after 2:55pm. This is proving to be very disruptive to the classrooms and the end of the day routines that are in place.

Food allergies and sharing food

Please remind your children not to share food at school. We have a lot of students with allergies and want to keep everyone safe. Please keep any Halloween treats with nuts at home.
