Treaties Recognition Week 2024 takes place from November 3-7th. This is an opportunity to educate, raise awareness, and understand the legality of treaties and the treaty relationship. All students, staff, and community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, benefit from learning about the treaties, truths, histories, excellence and current realities of Indigenous peoples.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission states that, “Too many Canadians still do not know the history of Indigenous peoples’ contributions to Canada, or understand that by virtue of the historical and modern Treaties negotiated by our government, we are all Treaty people. History plays an important role in reconciliation; to build for the future, Canadians must look to, and learn from, the past.”
Our Treaty Partners are the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Take a look at their website to learn more about the land we are on and the treaties that are in place.

Blue Jays Day at HDSB!
In a game for the ages, our Toronto Blue Jays stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park – and now they’re heading to the World Series!
To celebrate this epic moment, Monday, Oct. 27 is officially Blue Jays Day at the HDSB! Let’s fill our school with Blue Jays pride by wearing Jays colours or team gear. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just caught the fever during this playoff run, everyone’s invited to join the fun.
This celebration is a great opportunity to show our commitment to Kindness, Connection and Community by coming together to cheer, support one another and share in something that unites Canadians from coast to coast. It’s about celebrating together, building connections and showing the positive energy that makes our school communities strong.
Let’s channel our inner Jays – bring that Vladdy-level energy, some Springer spark and a touch of October magic to kick off the week in style. So dust off your caps, grab your jerseys (or anything blue and white!) and get ready to celebrate a truly Canadian baseball moment.
Let’s Go, Blue Jays!
Hallowe’en Information
With Halloween approaching, we’d like to share how our school will be engaging and provide a few reminders to help make the day safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Fun Interactive fall-themed fun in the library, including games and challenges
Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 can take part, with each class having a designated time to attend.
There is no expectation for students to wear a costume, but if your child chooses to dress up, please help ensure their costume reflects the positive and inclusive spirit of our school community.
Costume Guidelines:
Costumes should be fun, creative, and respectful.
Costumes that mimic the traditional attire of an ethnic, religious, racial, or gender group/identity are not appropriate.
Costumes that are overly frightening or meant to cause fear should be avoided.
Please leave replica weapons and masks at home.
ALLERGY Reminder: Please be sure that following Hallowe’en students know that they are not to share food, and that all snacks that come to school need to be nut free.

October is 'Walk to School' Month
To promote the 'Walk to school' initiative at Boyne, we are running a week-long event from Oct 20th-24th - to inspire and celebrate students for walking, biking, or rolling to school.
Each day of the week, an I-SPY Challenge will be posted on the daily announcement slides for students to enjoy and connect with nature on their way to school. Along this, will also feature eco-facts, read-alouds, and discussion prompts. This initiative ties into different SDGs (Good Health No.3, Sustainable cities No.11 and Climate Action No.13), and can be a great starting point for rich discussions around our role in the community.
Through this challenge, teachers will:
Count the number of students who walked, biked, or rolled to school.
Each day, classes with the highest number of walkers will be recognized on the board near the school entrance area: Gold Shoe – for the class with the most walkers, Silver Shoe – for the runner-up class. We hope this friendly competition will motivate students to see how their everyday small actions can go a long way in protecting the environment.
Thank you for supporting this and helping our school community take meaningful steps toward a greener future.

We hope you are enjoying your extra long Thanksgiving weekend!
Thank you to the School Council for running a really fun movie night! We appreciate all the work that went into it and we loved listening to all our Bear Cubs singing along!
On Friday we enjoyed an excellent day of professional learning. We had a presentation from Judy Halpern from Learning for A Sustainable Future (LSF). Boyne is an LSF school. “LSF is a Canadian charity that has been working for over 30 years to integrate sustainability education into Canada’s school system. In partnership with educators, youth, governments, businesses, and community members, we are empowering our children to change the world.” This work is based on the UN Sustainability Goals.

October 10th is World Mental Health Day - a day focused on raising awareness about mental health. Just like physical health, learning about mental health, understanding it, and taking care of it is important. When we understand how to recognize mental health concerns and the impact stigma can have on our ability to ask for help, we are in a better position to support our children.

Last week students from JK to Grade 8 did learning about Orange Shirt Day. Learning about Indigenous experiences in Canada is an important part of the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action.
At Boyne we are always working to understand our own personal bias and how to better affirm the identities of all our students every day in the classroom. This year we are doing a school wide book study in order to further our learning. Here is the book in case you would like to read it as well!

Learn more about mental health and stigma in these short videos:
Safety at drop off and dismissal:
Thank you to all families who are walking or riding the bus, or bikes/scooters to school! We see you and we appreciate you!
Students must use sidewalks and are encouraged to avoid the area by the parking lot. We are asking all families to avoid crossing at the entrance/exit to the parking lot. This area is very busy with cars and buses entering and exiting from the parking lot. If you are going north please use the main sidewalk along the school side. If you are going south please cross at the back of the parking lot and use the south sidewalk by the fence.
Please do not cross between buses. Walking or riding is the healthiest and safest way to get your child to school. If your child is eligible for the bus, please send them on the bus instead of driving. This also helps reduce traffic.

Some students in our community started this school year without essential supplies. Thanks to the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), many have already received urgent support—but the need is still high.
The Back-to-School Campaign is in its final days, and HLF is making a last push to help 300 students by September 30. They are asking for the community’s help to continue saying “YES” to every student who needs support.
Here's what one parent shared about the impact of this support:
“The support from HLF was crucial. It came at the right time, just when back-to-school shopping was necessary. It made my children extremely happy, and I’m so thankful for your support.”
To help the HLF meet their goal, please consider making a gift for a student in need today and Donate Now
Together, we can give students not just supplies, but confidence, dignity, and hope.

Occupational Therapist at Boyne
This year, our school will have regular visits from an Occupational Therapist (OT) who works with the School Based Rehabilitation Services (SBRS) program at ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development.
OTs are regulated health professionals who use their skills to help students participate in school and learning activities. They can help students develop fine motor skills (printing, writing, cutting with scissors), daily living skills (doing up zippers, opening containers, increasing independence) and self-regulation skills (how a child manages and adjusts their behaviour during a learning activity).
The OT or an OT Assistant may visit your child’s classroom, gym or playground to work with the school team to support classroom needs. They may provide a zipper lesson, a printing or cutting station, review best seating posture for printing or set up a classroom activity routine that supports motor skill development, self-regulation and participation. If you would like to be notified of the date of the OT visit to your child’s classroom, please speak to their teacher. Your child may also have the opportunity to participate in a small group lesson on letter formation.Should your child be selected to participate by the school team, they will notify you to discuss any questions you may have.
If your child appears to need more specific help with their fine motor, gross motor, self-care or self-regulation skills, your child’s teacher will contact you to provide more information. Consent for OT support would be required from you prior to referral and assessment.
You might also find it helpful to go to the ErinoakKids website at www.erinoakkids.ca to find workshops and resources to support your child in developing skills for independence and participation at home and school.

Walk and Wheel to School!
Students are encouraged to walk or bike to school when possible! It’s safe, good for the environment and your health, and teaches your child independence and community awareness. Plus, fresh air can boost learning and performance.
Same goes for anyone who is eligible for transportation – walk to your bus stops and take that bus to school! It’s an excellent way for students to learn about multiple forms of transportation, and will serve them well into the future when it’s time to take transit to get around throughout their lives.
[*For senior elementary and secondary students in Oakville, Burlington, and Milton only*] If your municipality has a transit system, you can look into programs that offer subsidized or even free municipal bus passes! Another great way for students to get around and see their neighbourhood while going to and from school.
The HDSB offers a handy Walk & Wheel Map that helps you plan efficient walking or cycling routes to school. Just select your school and mode of travel to estimate how long it will take. The map can help plan daily trips to the school by active transportation or even help with finding locations to park that are a five minute walk from the school.
Ready to give it a go? Visit the HDSB Walk & Wheel to School page to explore routes, tips and resources: Walk & Wheel to School. Let’s work together to create a healthier, safer and more connected school journey!
Spiritwear!!
Our Boyne Spiritwear is ready for purchase! We have changed vendors, so the link looks slightly different, but easy to navigate! Head to SchoolTee.com to purchase your orders! The orders close on September 28th, 2025.

Halton Learning Foundation
Help 300 HDSB Students Start School with Confidence by Sept. 30
Some students in our community walked into school last week without a backpack, supplies, or even lunch. The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), thanks to our donors, is here to help. Since the beginning of this school year, HLF has supported more than 126 students across our HDSB schools, including 70 students in the past two days alone, with emergency help and school supplies. HLF’s goal is to help 300 students by September 30, but with only a few weeks left, they are asking our generous community to step in urgently, to make sure they can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive. Here's what one parent shared last week about what saying “YES” meant to her family:
"Just wanted to say how grateful I am for this support. I’m a single mom, and because of your help, I’m able to get what my daughter needs for back-to-school and food, and I’m so unbelievably grateful for the support."
Make a gift for a student in need today: Donate Now
Together, we can give students not just supplies, but confidence, dignity, and hope.
Boyne School Social Worker and Child&Youth Care Provider
We would like to introduce our school’s Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYC-P): Coralee Mowery and our School’s Social Worker(s) (SW): Dania Asst. Coralee and Dania will be a part of the Boyne community this year.
What is a CYC-P? CYC-Ps are an active and integral part of the school community, often participating in school-wide activities (e.g. well-being teams, youth engagement, parent/guardian/caregiver information sessions, etc.) with educators to enhance student well-being. Students receive mental health literacy and social-emotional learning while at school through the curriculum. As a complement to this learning, CYC-Ps promote mental health through sharing and co-leading evidence-based social-emotional learning and activities to provide class wide programming. CYC-Ps are also part of response teams for all schools in the Halton District School Board (e.g. Traumatic Events Response Team, and suicide risk screening).
How CYC-Ps can support students
Parents/guardians/caregivers may receive notification letters and updates throughout the school year about evidence-based social-emotional literacy materials shared in classrooms with CYC-Ps. CYC-Ps can also provide specific opportunities for students through small group or individual sessions focusing on psychoeducation, well-being and skill building. These sessions support students in reaching their goals. This is done in consultation with and consent from parents/guardians/caregivers.
What is a Social Worker? Social Workers are an integral part of the school community. Social Workers work together with students, parents/caregivers, staff and community providers to help students feel well and have a positive school experience. Students learn ways to address their feelings and emotions through identity-affirming evidenced-based therapeutic interventions. Social Workers, like CYC-Ps, are also part of response teams for all schools in the HDSB. Access to a Social Worker is done through your child’s school with parent/guardian consent through the SRT process. Grade 7 and 8 students ( who are 12 years of age and older) can self-refer and receive individual psychotherapeutic support.
How can Social Workers support students? Social Workers use psychotherapeutic interventions to support students on a variety of issues. These interventions are evidence-based and are identity-affirming to ensure that students feel that their voice is being heard and validated. Some interventions used include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Social Workers and students work towards goal based outcomes.
Further information and additional support about the full complement of services from Student Well-Being
Please refer to the HDSB Mental Health & Well-Being webpage for more information on the support parent section available to students at school and how to access this support.

Students must use sidewalks and are encouraged to avoid the area by the parking lot. We are asking all students to use the south sidewalk by the fence, to avoid crossing at the entrance to the parking lot. Please do not cross between buses. Opt-in to receive text messages from the HDSB
If you provided your child’s school with a mobile phone number upon registration, you were sent a text message from SchoolMessenger providing you with the opportunity to opt-in to receive text messages from the HDSB. The text message requested that parents/guardians reply “Y” to opt-in to receive attendance text notifications.
If you replied “Y” to the text message, you are subscribed to receive notifications by text about your child’s attendance.
If you did not reply to the text message, you will not receive notifications by text from the HDSB.
No repeat invitations to opt-in will be sent. If you wish to receive text message attendance notifications, please update your communication preferences on the SchoolMessenger website or app once you have created your account with SchoolMessenger.

We have a number of students with anaphylactic allergies. For this reason we ask families not to send any food with nuts to school. This includes peanut butter. Students are not allowed to share food, in order to keep all our students safe. We are also a “best wishes” only school, and ask that food and treats are not sent to share with classmates.

Important Information and Reminders
Safety at Boyne
Many thanks to parents who have set their school routines to avoid driving near the school at Drop Off or Pick Up. We have more than 1100 students who are arriving and departing at these times, and we have worked hard to make this as safe as possible. Unfortunately due to constraints around the building this is not a convenient situation for parents who wish to drive. We have prioritized SAFETY over CONVENIENCE. Please know that our school was designed as a “walk to” school. As we have grown we have also added busing for students who are further than 1.6 km from the school and for those who live north of Louis St. Laurent. How can you help to make Boyne safer?
1. Walk to School HDSB - Walk and Wheel to School webpage
2. Send your child on the Bus if they qualify
3. Park away from the school in a legal parking spot and walk back
4. Choose a meeting spot far away from the school
5. Do not make U-turns in front of the school
6. Please do your part to avoid anyone getting hurt
7. Please note that scooters and bikes may not be brought into the school and must be locked at the racks at Door 11 or by the south sidewalk.
COMING SOON - A Crosswalk and a Crossing Guard - at the corner of Farmstead and Duignan! We have been meeting regularly with the Town of Milton and the HDSB Facilities team, to share ideas about making our school safer.

Spirit Wear!!
Our Boyne Spiritwear is ready for purchase! We have changed vendors, so the link looks slightly different, but easy to navigate! Head to SchoolTee.com, use the Access Code: BOYN.MIL to purchase your orders! The orders close on September 28th, 2025.
Expectations
During the month of September, teachers are helping students to be aware of the expectations for students in Halton. The purpose is to: maintain a consistent standard of behaviour; to provide clear communication to all stakeholders about school and system culture; and to ensure safe, caring and inclusive experience for the entire school community. We ask families to review the following expectations with their children as well:
Responsible Use Procedures for Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
HDSB Code of Conduct - Please review. There are responsibilities outlined for Students, Staff and Parents. Students will be reviewing the Code of Conduct over the first few weeks and at various times throughout the year.

Hearing and Vision Screening - School Screening Association
Our clinic will be at your school, Boyne PS, on: October 2nd – October 8th, 2025 (pending participation). Register your child and complete the payment through this Online Registration.
Deadline for registration is Sept 30th and the duration at the school may be adjusted based on student participation.
Your child’s Hearing and Vision should be screened every year!
A fee of $25.00 is collected to help offset the cost of bringing this clinic to your school.
Why Screening Matters:
Growing children are very susceptible to middle ear problems and one of the best ways to prevent hearing loss is early detection of middle ear function issues.
Vision issues are common in children, so early detection is crucial for their healthy development and academic success.
Our screening program helps identify hearing and vision concerns before they impact learning and social development, ensuring children get the support they need to thrive. As part of the program, we will refer any results that are considered outside the normal range to the parents for follow-up with their physician and/or optometrist.
For hearing concerns, we recommend bringing your referral to your physician, who can then refer you to an ENT specialist, which is covered by OHIP. Alternatively, you have the option to schedule an appointment with an Audiologist without needing a referral from your family physician. Please note that visits to an Audiologist may not be covered by OHIP, and you could incur a fee ranging from $75 to $150 or more.
Your child's hearing is not being monitored unless they're seeing an audiologist or an ENT specialist, making our screening program a valuable resource for your child's health.
While eye exams are covered by OHIP, our hearing clinic offers a basic vision screening for students participating in the hearing clinic.
For more information and to address all your questions and concerns, please visit our website at www.schoolscreeningassociation.ca.
Spoons and Forks
Lots of children come to school without utensils. We are looking for donations of plastic/wooden forks and spoons in the office. Thank you.
